6 Weeks to Healthy Hair- Platinum Damage, Week 1

Healthy hair seems like a never-ending battle, and a problem that yields few solutions. We decided to apply our advice to real life clients with real life damage and show you REAL results after 6 weeks. We chose three clients that we feel represent real problems in the majority of people, and are having them come in once a week for 6 weeks. Stay tuned to our blog posts to follow along on their progress.

Week 1 - Aftyn's Starting Canvas

Our first model, Aftyn, has been lightening her hair for 10+ years and has utilized tape-in extensions throughout that time frame as well. She has always had fine hair, and has used her extensions to add fullness. She is new to our salon and products, but was very excited to start. Recently, she has noticed that her hair isn't reacting as well to her routine, and she has been advised by her stylist to pause the use of extensions in order to repair her hair. Her ends were very uneven from breakage and were dry and sparse. Over our 6 weeks together, our main goal is to be able to utilize extensions again and improve the overall health of her hair to promote growth. There was also some discoloration problems that we are going to target with treatments in the future. REMINDER: Hair health is a marathon, not a sprint. 6 weeks is the minimum span of time to really make a difference.

After some consultation, there were a few things that could have caused Aftyn's damage.

  1. She had recently moved in the past 2 years and was dealing with new water and possibly had a mineral build up. This can contribute to dryness and breakage, especially with fine or lightened hair. This could also be the reason for her discoloration on her ends.

  2. She could have gradually over processed her hair and had color damage. It's not unheard of to damage your hair with lightener. It is especially easy with fine hair, and over time it is almost inevitable.

  3. She didn't have a strong hair care routine to support her color choices. We always recommend a strong prep routine that restores moisture and protects your hair throughout the day.

Our plan for week one of Aftyn's journey was to create a strong starting point for her hair. Her hair was very fragile, and we wanted to immediately correct the unfixable points of her hair.

  • Our first step was to trim Aftyn's hair. She hadn't received a cut in quite some time and had some parts of her ends that needed to be removed to ensure growth.

  • After the cut, we used K18's Repair Mist for 4 minutes on dry hair. We chose K18 because it's considered the best system for repairing damage on the market today. K18 restores the hair's elasticity by up to 99% and rebuilds broken bonds in the hair due to color or heat damage.

  • We then took Aftyn to the bowl and shampooed her hair with Neuma's Repair Shampoo. This shampoo is specifically formulated to aid in moisture and protein loss in damaged hair.

  • After shampooing, we used Neuma's Moisture Mask for 4 minutes to soften the hair strand and add protection.

  • Before styling, we used three products on wet hair to finish her treatment. First, K18's pro mask for four minutes. This is the second part to K18's treatment and is a leave-in mask that continues to repair, protect, and seal the cuticle. We then used our main prep products before blow-drying: Pravana's Intense Therapy Leave-In and Neuma's Argan Oil Treatment.

In just the first treatment, we noticed a huge difference in the appearance of her hair. It was less dull and rough, and already was stronger. The feeling of her hair still wasn't where we needed, but did improve greatly. Although we still have a long way to go, we're confident that Aftyn's hair will come a long way in our six week journey!
