If you have curly hair, you know the struggle of finding a styling and care routine. We worked with a client with 3C texture, and over the span of 6 weeks, locked in a styling routine and technique that worked for her curls. Along the way, we also fixed some build up and moisture issues to end with a tamed, frizz free result. Here's how we did it:
During our consultation, we decided that she had a 3C texture, fine hair, and her biggest problem was frizz and excess volume. We wanted to keep some volume, but have it be under control and frizz free. We first started with a K18 treatment to treat any damage from previous color, and we periodically did moisture masks throughout the 6 weeks to seal in moisture. This was to heal any health issues that were affecting her frizz and curl structure.
Throughout the six weeks, we used multiple different techniques with styling to see what worked and what didn't work for her hair. After trial and error, we learned these critical things that made a huge difference:
These specific products had to be used in THIS order: 1. Mizani Foam Wrap , 2. MoroccanOil Curl Defining Cream, 3. Lanza Styling Gel.
Her natural base dried out very quickly, thus producing frizz on the top 3-4 inches of her hair. In order to combat this, we applied a leave in conditioner and the Mizani Foam Wrap immediately to her base before we did ANY drying, brushing, or manipulating. We did this in the bowl at the sink, when she was still dripping wet.
We struggled with a Denman brush, but ultimately determined that when we used larger clumps of hair and pulled it straight up, letting it fall naturally and form a curl clump, it produced a longer lasting curl with less frizz. We did this between applying curl cream and gel.
After applying a generous amount of the foam wrap, we raked curl cream through the roots to ends to fully coat the hair. After forming the curls with the Denman brush, we then scrunched in a small amount of Lanza gel to form a cast over the curls to set it.
Pro Tip: We used small metal double prong clips along the hair line to produce subtle volume and curl definition at the base. We hand selected 6-8 curl clumps, and clipped them lifted off the scalp.
When diffusing, we hover diffused and rarely ever touched her hair to maintain smoothness. We opted to "Squeeze" out the curl cast with a smoothing cream as opposed to an oil, we noticed it was a lot smoother and shinier this way. We used Neuma's Smoothing Cream. This was our outcome: According to our client, her curls lasted a lot longer without washing and the frizz was far better than when she had attempted styling. After 6 weeks of trying, we finally found a routine for her to do daily to keep her curls tamed and defined.
